Located in the Alberta Badlands, Medicine Hat boasts many great trails for walking, running, hiking, mountain biking, and even walking your dog. Whether you've just moved to the Gas City, or you're visiting, read on for just a few great places to walk your dog in Medicine Hat.
Strathcona Island Park
Strathcona Island Park is not only a great place for dog walking, but its vast trails, playground, splash park, and barbecue pits make it a top choice for an afternoon spent outdoors.
These on-leash trails, along the South Saskatchewan River, provide kilometres of paved pathways with breathtaking views of the Alberta Badlands as you walk through the trees, stop at viewpoints, and stroll along the riverside. For a walk just under two hours, try this 6 km journey.
This is a great spot if you live in North Flats, but worth the journey from anywhere in the city. Our Eighty-Nine Collins Apartments and Hillview Apartments properties in Crestwood are within a short drive of this much-loved spot.
Police Point Park
On the north side of the river, enjoy the beautiful views from Police Point Park's nature reserve. These well-maintained trails offer hours of enjoyment. Stop and relax on many park benches throughout the area and take in the beautiful scenery.
Enjoy on-leash trails shared with those mountain biking, with a 3 km loop along the river, or experience it for yourself as there are many more routes to discover.
This is another Medicine Hat park worth the journey no matter where you are, but those in Parkview and Ranchlands have the shortest distance to travel. Our Matthew Manor property is nearby in the Ranchlands neighbourhood if you want a home on the doorstep of this great nature reserve.
Ajax Coulee Trail
While most of the city's off-leash trails feature signage, this City of Medicine Hat resource lists all off-leash trails in the city, including detailed directions for entering each.
Ajax Coulee Trail is an off-leash trail, stretching 1.1 km of paved pathway and boardwalks, located just north of the on-leash Kin Coulee Park. Find trailhead entrances beside 6 Connaught Dr SW, and the east side of the Lorne Holden ball diamond to enjoy this forested area for a 20-minute walk.
This trail is particularly great for those residing in Kennsington, Connaught, or Marlborough communities. Our Edwin Manor and Fairway Plaza properties are just nearby.
Saratoga Dog Park
The only off-leash dog park in the city is still developing, but already provides a great place to let dogs run and play without the worries of walking along an open area.
Located in South Flats, Saratoga Dog Park is fenced and enclosed and features a separate fenced area for smaller dogs. Dog owners appreciate the current facilities including shelters for owners to stay out of the sun, as well as training obstacles included free for use. This park is known for friendly people, and great for dogs to play together.
