When moving, one of the most important things to get right is your complete postal address. This can be a bit tricky, especially if you're moving into an apartment complex. Whether you're a first-time renter or new to Canada, we’ll walk you through how to properly write your address to ensure your packages arrive and you can send mail without any issues.

If you live in an apartment, you'll be assigned a suite number, which indicates your floor and specific unit. For example, if you live on the third floor, your apartment number may start with a 3; and if you're on the fifth floor, it often begins with a 5. The remaining digits typically indicate the suite's proximity to the elevator or stairs. If you're in the suite closest to the elevator on the third floor, your apartment number might be 301, and so on.

Once you have determined your suite number then you can write your address accordingly.

Here’s how addresses are typically written in Canada:

Recipient's name

Recipient's business name (if applicable)

Suite number, street address number, and street name

City, province or territory, and postal code

Country

For example, we will write the address of someone who lives at our Glenmore Heights location in Calgary, with suite number 301.

Jane Doe

301 - 700 67th Ave S.W.

Calgary, AB T2V-2H3

Canada

Clarifying Different Formats

Sometimes, people are unsure whether to use a dash or write “Unit” or “Apt.” in their address. In Canada, if your suite number and address are clear, there’s some flexibility. You could write your address as “301 - 700 67th Ave S.W.,” or simply “Unit 301, 700 67th Ave S.W.” Both formats are acceptable if the suite number is easily identifiable. However, it’s a good idea to follow the format most commonly used in your area to avoid any potential confusion.

Keep in mind, when sending mail within Canada, there's no need to include the country. However, if you're mailing internationally, be sure to add the destination country at the bottom of the address.

Shared Entrances and Mailboxes

When moving into a new place, be sure to find out from your property manager where your mail is delivered and how to retrieve packages, especially if your building uses a central delivery point. If you're unsure about how to write your address or where to pick up your mail and packages, don’t hesitate to reach out to your property manager for guidance.

Happy mailing!
